No Idolatry

As I was studying the story of Joseph this morning, I was thinking how there was idolatry between Joseph and his earthly father.  Genesis 20:3 says “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”  This worshipping another can often come in the guise of parent and child, which can be detrimental to both.  There was suffering and separation for both Jacob and Joseph to endure simply because of this affection including the hatred of Joseph’s brothers toward him.

Genesis 37:3-4 reads “Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him.  When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.”

That type of love is more of an obsession than pure Love.  We can check this if it takes all our attention from God!

Idolatry

Man has been warned against idolatry since Biblical times.  Idols of today sometime appear more subtle than in ancient time.  Possessions, status, people and self-aggrandizement are popular deities of today and many are guilty of worshipping these false gods.  Joy and peace come from “not” bowing down to those, but knowing the one God!

Exodus 20:4-5 reads, “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.  You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.”

Today, I will watch what I worship.
