Acts 17:27 reads, “God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.” This morning while studying and praying about a specific issue, I was gently reminded of “Pop Quizzes” I was given in school.
They were not given as punishment due to something I had done wrong, but just to see if I were learning and applying what I was studying and learning. The same applies here as I read the Bible. How freeing that is to me to look upon a seeming challenge that way.
“Be still and know that I am God.” is from Genesis 46:10 and is how I begin each morning. With that verse, outside thoughts can be quietened as I listen for God. The first thing that is overcome is fear and doubt, which is mesmerizing and hypnotizing. Sometimes, it takes longer than others, but my thinking needs to be receptive and humble and can only reach that stage when fear is gone.
When I realize that God is always here, not just when I need Him to clean up a mess that I have made but He also preserves Good, which is ongoing. There are times, when it is less obvious, but when I trust Him completely, He reveals what I need to know and always has. My heart is filled with humility and gratitude as I see proof of Him everywhere.
As I reread the story of the Prodigal Son, then ponder all of the healings in the Bible, I am so reassured that there is absolutely nothing that God cannot do. We could not dream up anything that is too difficult or too evil that God, Love cannot dispel. Psalm 16:11 reads, “You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
Today, I will relish that thought!
Earlier today when I went to the store to buy groceries, the woman who checked me out was very rude and negative. As I prayed about how to handle her, I was reminded of Genesis 1:26-27 where it states, “Then God said, “let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female he created them.”
Now as I thought on this while still looking at her, I began to pray to know the truth about her as well because those verses are all-inclusive. As I left, I told her to have a blessed day and my heart lifted. As I heard her complain, I thought about “Complaint being poverty” and “Gratitude being riches”. The entire trip home I prayed about her and vaguely remembered a time when I would have reacted to her rudely. That was so long ago and never a part of who I am, nor could it be her.
This morning as I was reading the story about Lazarus and asking God to reveal a deeper meaning to me, a light came on! In John 11:43-44, it reads, “And when He thus had spoken, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.”
As I pondered this, I thought of people I had known in the past and remembered something negative about them. I wouldn’t want them to do the same with me. Just as I feel I have grown spiritually, they may have just as well. Maybe Jesus was saying that to the people when He told them to Loose him and let him go. Rather than see him dead in spirit, He wanted to show them to raise their thoughts about him. Isn’t that seeing through God’s eyes when we see the Good in people.
This past week-end was spent with about twenty relatives that have not been together in years. Had to work with 1 Peter 5:6-7 before going which reads, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”
Rather than rely on human memory, I learned to listen more to God and look at all these precious people with fresh eyes! What a glorious week-end it was! When someone began an old story, I prayed to listen with humor and Love, rather than becoming defensive. That can make all the difference in the world.
We are on the road and I awoke this morning with the knowing that God is governing all. Not at my desk as I usually am but realizing God is right here right now and I can never be where He is not! He is my security.
