Many years ago, I heard a story about someone passing and was at the pearly gates. Saint Peter told him he had received the right to go to heaven and took him by the hand to this wonderful place where there were long tables filled with luscious food and drink, beautiful music and long, gold eating utensils where everyone was feeding each other.
Then the man asked if he could just glimpse into hell to see what it was like. Saint Peter agreed and took him into another room with the exact same set up, but rather than the beautiful music, there was screeching and yelling. The same long gold eating utensils but everyone was trying to feed themselves rather than others so the food was never reaching their mouths.
That is so true for me today. When my focus is on others with compassion and love, I lose self-absorption where my challenges appear so huge. They soon disappear when gratitude and humility and love for others is foremost in my thought.
Galations 5:22 reads, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.”
